ASTROLOGY is the science that suggests that the life and behavior of human beings are influenced by stars and planets. By analyzing the positions of these heavenly bodies at the time of a person’s birth, at any given time whenever required, astrologers predict the course of events in the life of an individual.

This science can claim an antiquity of five thousand years and was prevalent in ancient India, Mesapotamia, Greece and china. Now it is popular all over the world. As it is the case in every branch of science, astrology also developed in accordance with changing times.

It is common knowledge that astrology as predicted in India, especially Kerala, is the most reliable and comprehensive. It has scriptural sanction since it is a limb of the Vedas, Vedanga as it is called. It forms the eye of the Vedas, Veda–Nayanam.

Nayanam or eye is perhaps the most important organ in one’s body, giving guidance to those who use them. Astrology in short gives guidance taking advantage of which human beings can plan their future.

Indian Astrology is primarily based on the lunar system. Both the Sun and the Moon excert influence on the earth. The waxing and waning of the Moon cause tides in the ocean. During eclipse the behavioral pattern of human beings as well as animals and plants undergo noticeable changes. Influence of these heavenly bodies thus cannot be ignored. The word lunacy evolved out of lunar and one can notice that in the case of mentally deranged, the intensity of lunar fluctuations during full moon and new moon days.

The system of casting horoscopes based on the BIRTH STAR was not at all adopted by the western culture, but it is slowly catching up. A fascinating phenomenon not generally observed is that a person’s birth- star may often very often be close to those of his or her parents.Threr’s no rational explanation for this. In the case of animals, death often occurs near about new moon or full moon.

Modern astrologers heavily rely on scientific equipments to scan the sky whereas our forefathers did it with naked eyes and deep meditation.

The importance of seasons in agricultural operations cannot be over emphasized. Seasons are caused by changing planetary positions and the claim that such changes can influence living beings and plants appears credible. Our sages must have concluded that by analyzing the planetary constellations at the time of an individuals birth a reasonably accurate picture of his or her life could be forecast. For this an intensive and thus astrology is comprised of two factors ;( a) astronomy combined with mathematics (golaganitham) and (b) analysis cum interpretation (astrology or Jyothisastra) Predictions are aligned with the later.

Indian astrology was once looked down upon a manifestation of superstition, but the situation has changed. Once a phenomenon in the domain of Hindus, it has now been accepted universally, even cutting across religious barriers. Daily and weekly forecasts by newspapers and periodicals have wide readership.

Though analytical forecast of possible events in life is the core of astrology common people tend to ignore the mathematical part on which interpretations are based .the forecast phase consists of 1.Genaral Horoscope spanning one’s lifetime and 2.Inrepretations based on current happenings.

Horoscope in Sanskrit is JAATHAKAM.’Jaatha’ is the emergence and ‘kam’ is the head. The birth star is identified by noting the exact time when the whole head of the infant emerges out. Another school of thought has it that the exact time of birth is when the infant has the first breath of fresh air containing oxygen or starting.

Horoscope gives general guidance but for minute details further analysis of planetary positions during periods of stress\calamity failures in office ventures etc are imperative. Here verifications in consultation with competent astrologers are indicated. Forecasts appearing in print\visual media usually generalize matters.

All over the western world, people bestow importance only on the date of birth and not the time of birth. Most are ignorant about the stars and the phases of moon when the birth actually takes place. If accurate astrological analysis is to be undertaken, another aspect known in kerala parlance as KOORU has also to be reckoned with.KOORU evolves out of the influence of the sun, stars and the moon.Rasi indicates the apparent shift of the SUN.

In short, birth star and Kooru are the most two important factors in astrological verification and predictions. This aspect has to be understood by those seeking advises.

In Hindu methodology there are twenty seven stars and they are Aswini,Bharani,Krithika,Rohini,Mrigasire,Aaroodham,Punarvasu, pushya,

Aslesha,Makha,poorvaphalguni,Uthara,phalguni,hastha,Chithra,swathi,

Vishakha,Anuradha,Jyeshta,Moola,poorvashadhe,Utharashadhe,braavana,

sathabhishag,Porvabhadrapada,utharbhadrapada and revathi.

These are subsequently clubbed into twelve RASIS and certain overlapping also occurs.

Nine birth stars thus have two KOORU each and this has to be taken into consideration while casting horoscopes. For example, Krithika is divided into four parts. Those born during first quarter will have Aries as KOORU and those born during the remaining three quarters will have Taurus KOORU.This problem will continue in the remaining eight also.

The division followed by westerners a Aries ,Taurus etc will not exactly corresponded o the Kooru of Kerala system since the former is arrived at by taking into account the date of birth whereas the latter is arrived at by looking at the star at the time of birth, the Birth star. The Indian system emphasizes the importance of the birth star and also correlates the positions of the moon, stars and the most important factors the sun including its planets. If western and Indian systems are compared, dispassionately, it will be proved beyond doubt that the Kerala system is much superior.

Why does one attach importance to astrological guidance? The answer is simple. Life is complicated with many pitfalls. Advance information about possible impediments helps one to plan future course. Astrologers do not claim absolute success since some problems may hit like bolts from the blue. But many hazards can be judiciously avoided and astrologers can generate a certain amount of self confidence.

Take for instance an agriculturist, industrialist or a senior officer in a major establishment. The predictions based on KOORU and planetary positions at a given moment can project in advance the course of events.

During the coming days. The astrologers point out the auspicious and inauspicious moments and periods. This guidance enables one to plan ventures and investments as well as travels and decision-making processes thus minimizing risk factors. One need not be as slave to astrology but timely warning and advises will be of immense help. Finer aspects cannot be ascertained from the horoscope alone. A detailed study of planetary positions on a given day correlated with the Kooru of the persons concerned will provide the required information.

A person who is not conversant with the birth star can have his or her’s Horoscope cast if the astrologers is informed about the date of birth also the latitude and longitude of the place where the birth has take place. The astrologer can with a good amount of accuracy, identify the birth star as well as the Kooru and then cast the horoscope.

Take the case of a person with Aswini as the birth star. Texts on astrology describes his characteristics as ‘intelligent, clever, honest, well behaved, fond of jewellery, having happy married life with children, qualified to be the head of the family (suggestive of having his own house). Aswini being part of asterim aswini-bharani and quarter phase of krithikam a person born within this asterim will have an urge to be constantly on travel , will have round beautiful eyes easily pleased disposition, romantic inclinations bordering on sexual promiscuity, week knees (physical handicap)fluctuating financial status, and a yes for leafy vegetables.

Charting the course of life on a daily basis for all those with particular birth stars taking in to account extraneous influences is beyond any astrologer. Influences of planets can produce good and bad effects. For malefic influences there are remedial measures as well: mostly Hindu religious rites, which may not be appreciated by non – Hindus. but there are two specific remedial rites which can be whole heartedly accepted by one and all irrespective of religious faith , and they are ;1.wearing specific jewels/precious stones,2.wearing clothes of particular colors.

Indian system does not recognize birth stones since the emphasis are on phases of planets known as DASA in Indian parlance. Though twenty two jewels are mentioned in Brihat-samhita considered as gospel by Indian astrologers nine of them are recommended as important. They are Ruby, Emarald, Pearl, Topaz, Moonstone, Coral, and Diamond and cats eye.

The precious stones are worn through a ring on the finger leaving the bottom of the studded portion open so that the sun’s rare refracted by the stone will fall on the body of the person wearing ring and this is very significance of wearing stones. The astrologer looking at the DASA and other planetary configurations will recommend the particular type of stone as well as the period for which it will have to be worn.

Example: or sun’s malefic influences, Ruby, Moon’s pearl, Mar’s coral and so on.

Other religious rites are also mentioned among which the most important is offering prayers to Almighty and this should be acceptable to all.

GENARAL NOTES: Astrologers learn their craft in the gurukulam style at the feet of the chosen teacher. In well known families the younger generation inherit the mantle. A profound knowledge of SANSKRIT is imperative.

Even after having digested the basic nuances are learnt under the wings of a senior ad they start independent practice only after a probationary period lasting couple of years.

In India people consult an Astrologer to ascertain auspicious time for all special occasions like marriages. The crop will be abundant if the seeds are sown at the appropriate time and results will not be favorable if the time chosen is not auspicious. This principle can be extended to all other activities and hence importance of MUHUTRHAM or auspicious moment or periods.

Marriage is one of the most important moment in one’s life and all religious groups attach importance to the event. The ritualistic part may differ from one community to another but the sanctity of the occasion is ever questioned.

According to scriptures the important of marriage goes beyond carnal satisfaction and procreation, Both men and women have innate virtues and it is suggested that what is found lacking in the may have available in plenty in the female; n advice versa. Seperate existence of such virtues does no good to either and only marriage can cause fusion of these qualities. It is bonding of mental and spiritual power of the couple.

Marriages between those brought up in diverse surroundings especially between the virtuous and those who were wayward in their formative years, is generally frowned upon. After detailed analysis of pedigree cum economic status negotiations between the families of bride and bridegroom are initiated. Next come comparison of horoscopes. Astrologers play vital role here and they can predict the course of marriage life. If impediments are noticed remedial measures are also suggested.

Detailed procedures are there in scriptures. Those interested in resorting to remedial measures can utilize the services of tantrics and mantrics to perform rituals In the name of and for the benefit of the concerned persons.
